A large and informative Christian Recovery Conference – titled CROSS Florida – is being convened in the Miami area in early February, 2013; and Ken and I have been invited to do workshops that will enable participation, questions, answers, study, and suggestions about Alcoholics Anonymous Christian origins, history, founding, original Christian Fellowship program founded in Akron in 1935. And how this highly successful Christian Recovery aa-history can bring hope, light, and victory to those who want to know the history of Alcoholics Anonymous and why it is so relevant for believers today.
At the request of CROSS Florida leadership, Ken and I have prepared and submitted the following plans for our part in CROSS Florida.
The Planned Presentation and Workshops by Dick B. and Ken B. on A.A. History
1. If possible, we would like to do three workshops.
2. The main title for our presentation(s) during the CROSS Florida conference will/should be:
“Applying the history, techniques, and program of the early Akron A.A. “Christian fellowship” in A.A. and other 12-Step recovery work today.”
3. In order of preference, the three workshop titles would be these:
a. The Christian origins of A.A., the Christian upbringings of A.A.’s cofounders, and the simple seeking of God’s help by the first three AAs.
b. The documentation and summary of the original, seven-point A.A. program, the 16 pioneer practices associated with that program, and the personal stories of what A.A.’s pioneers did.
c. Applying First Century Christian principles to recovery today: Grounded on today’s Conference-approved literature, learning how that literature supports Christian recovery and belief in God, and application by Christians in 12-Step programs today.
4. The following is a recommended description of our presentation:
A.A. historians and writers Dick B. and Ken B. have spent 23 years of research learning and publishing the facts about Christian Recovery origins, the early Christian AAs, and the “Christian fellowship” program that achieved great successes (at least 50% in Akron and 93% in Cleveland). The original 29 personal stories in the “Personal Stories” section of the first edition of the Big Book give accurate details, in the words of the pioneers, as to how they recovered and were cured in early A.A. Dick and Ken will show you the simple, Christian origins of recovery from, and cure of, alcoholism that began around 1850, that were absorbed into the Christian upbringings of Bill W. and Dr. Bob, that became embedded in the original Akron A.A. program, and that are still amply supported in A.A./12 Step Conference-approved literature today.
Exhibits, books, pamphlets, and other resources will be used to encourage audience participation, and to encourage questions, answers, and suggestions to encourage Christian recovery on a local and an international basis. The role of the International Christian Recovery Coalition (www.ChristianRecoveryCoalition.com) will be featured fully.
